Bernadette Austin has built her career on creating healthy, sustainable communities. She is dedicated to community development that embraces responsible land use and social equity. She has played a key role in the development of Sacramento's first transit oriented development, West Sacramento's first urban farm stand, the first project in Sacramento to follow the statewide dissolution of redevelopment, and the first project in the country to implement the HUD 811 program, a program that combines housing vouchers and in-home supportive services that allow low-income disabled adults to live independently.
Bernadette is founder and principal of Bernadette Austin Consulting Services, which draws on a decade of experience in community development initiatives and public-private partnerships. Since the summer of 2016, she has served as the first Associate Director of the Center for Regional Change at the University of California at Davis. In this capacity, she is responsible for the management and operations of an applied research center with an over $1 million annual budget. As project manager for Domus Development, Bernadette was responsible for the predevelopment, financing, and construction of residential and mixed-use properties. Prior to that, she worked in public finance and real estate development for the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency.
The projects Bernadette has worked on have been honored with distinctions from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Sacramento Area Council of Governments, Sacramento Regional Transit, and the Sacramento Business Journal. She has been recognized as a notable woman leader by Sacramento Magazine and Comstock's Magazine, and the Sacramento Business Journal listed her on their 40 Under 40 list in 2013. In 2014 the Urban Land Institute awarded her the Women's Leadership Initiative Scholarship, and in 2015 the ULI Sacramento awarded her the Member Award at the annual Vision Honors Awards. Bernadette is a past recipient of the Ted K. Bradshaw Alumnus Award for exemplifying the passion, humanity, and devotion for community empowerment exhibited by the late department chair of the UC Davis Community Development Graduate Group.
